BREAST CANCER Detecting cancer at an early stage can save lives

By Dr. Samuel Agredano Pérez

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among women in Mexico and the leading cause of cancer-related death. In recent years, its incidence has risen, with mortality largely linked to late diagnosis. This increase is associated with factors such as population
aging, lifestyle changes, the absence of a national early-detection program, and limited access to specialized oncologic care.
Several factors increase the risk of developing breast cancer. The most widely recognized include:

• Family-related: family history of breast cancer (first-degree relatives), carrying a genetic mutation that predisposes to breast cancer.

• Hormonal: early onset of menstruation, late menopause, nulliparity, or history of hormone therapy.

• Lifestyle-related: obesity, alcohol consumption.

• Benign breast conditions: high breast density, atypical hyperplasia.

• Environmental: exposure to ionizing radiation before the age of 30.

It is important to emphasize that some of these factors are modifiable, and therefore the risk of breast cancer can be reduced.
Prevention is a cornerstone of public health. Breast cancer is a disease that is preventable and, if detected early, may even be curable. To promote early detection, the following recommendations are essential:

• Monthly breast self-examination starting at age 18.

• Annual clinical breast examination starting at age 25.

• Screening mammography beginning at age 40 for women at average risk.

• Breast ultrasound is preferred for women under 35.

Mammography is the only imaging method proven to reduce breast cancer mortality. Despite advances in treatment, mammographic detection has had the greatest impact on survival. For this reason, awareness campaigns are widely promoted, particularly in October, emphasizing timely screening to identify tumors that are often undetectable by physical examination, enabling diagnosis at an early and potentially curable stage.
Breast cancer is increasingly common in our population. We must continue to strive for earlier diagnosis. I urge all women to practice self-examination, undergo regular clinical breast exams, and schedule mammograms at the appropriate time. Although many myths persist about this disease, what truly matters is knowing what we can do to prevent it and to detect it early.

Lake Chapala has long attracted retirees seeking a balance of affordability and quality of life. Its mild climate, welcoming community, and lower cost of living make it an appealing choice—but just as important is the area’s access to quality healthcare, a key factor for those planning their retirement abroad.

In this regard, Mexico’s private healthcare system stands out for its professionalism, efficiency, and high standards, with many providers delivering exceptional medical services that combine clinical excellence with genuine patient care, and—while quality comes at a price—as in any country, in Mexico that price is far more attainable, offering not only outstanding treatment but also the peace of mind to live well, feel secure, and fully enjoy the privilege of calling Mexico home.

Public vs. Private: Know the Difference

Mexico’s public healthcare system provides services at little or no cost, much like Canada’s provincial plans or the UK’s NHS. For millions, it is an essential lifeline. However, high demand can overwhelm the system, leading to bureaucratic delays, long waits for specialist appointments or surgeries, and slower response times in urgent situations.

With the sheer volume of patients, care in a Mexican public hospital can feel rushed and impersonal. Limited infrastructure and administrative hurdles may slow access to surgeries, imaging, and other essential services, with wait times varying greatly. Understanding these challenges is key to making informed healthcare decisions that balance quality, timeliness, and cost.

In contrast, private hospitals operate independently of government funding, allowing them to reinvest in infrastructure, staff, and advanced technology. This results in a more responsive, personalized experience—with immediate access to specialists, no waiting lists for surgeries, modern facilities, and continuity of care with your chosen doctor. For retirees and expats, especially those with chronic conditions or urgent needs, these advantages can be critical.

Health Coverage Abroad: What You Need to Know

A common misconception among new expats is assuming their home country coverage applies internationally. In reality, national systems like the NHS (UK), Canada’s provincial plans, and U.S. Medicare do not cover care abroad. While some Medicare Advantage or Medigap plans may offer limited emergency coverage overseas, specifics vary by policy.

If Mexico is where you’ve chosen to spend your winters—or your years—private or international health insurance can make all the difference. It ensures fast, reliable access to care and protects you from unexpected costs during emergencies or major treatments—peace of mind that travels with you.

Ribera Medical Center partners with an extensive list of international insurance providers and often accepts numerous Medicare supplement plans. Call or visit to see exactly how your coverage works for you.

Healthcare with Heart

Private medical care in Mexico often matches—and sometimes exceeds—the standards of high-income countries, combining advanced technology and highly trained professionals with the warmth and attentiveness that define local culture. Ribera Medical Center delivers on that promise, providing faster, more personal care at a cost that lets you focus less on expenses and more on enjoying life in your community. That’s not just smart living—it’s the reassurance of knowing first-class healthcare is right here at home.
